Dear 2023 Seniors and Parents,

We have so much happening this week at school with the senior pep rally and football game, the TSTC Fall Preview on Thursday, and the Fall Preview at Texas A&M University at Texarkana on Friday.  However, the FAFSA and Work Readiness Night next Tuesday is an event you don’t want to miss.  Please note that a state requirement for graduation is for students to complete a FAFSA form OR the opt-out found here:

 Financial aid opt-out_revised_10.2021_final_english.pdf

ALL students must have completed the above form and turn it in to Ms. Burney OR show proof of completion of the FAFSA to be able to graduate in May.  Once again, this is a STATE requirement from TEA.

On Tuesday night, 11/8/2022, from 5:30 to 7:30, representatives from Panola Jr. College, TSTC, and Texas A&M University will be here in the commons area to help you complete the FAFSA.  Students and parents should both obtain a FSA ID# before attending this important workshop.  You may request the number at FSA ID#.  You will need to bring a chrome book or laptop, social security numbers for both the senior and parent(s) and the latest Income Tax return.

Additionally, we are excited that representatives from Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and the Workforce Solutions of East Texas will be here to help provide support for students seeking employment or college and career training as well.

TWC is the state agency charged with overseeing and providing workforce development services such as job matching, recruiting and training to Texas job seekers and employers. TWC also administers the Unemployment Benefits and Unemployment Tax programs. TWC's mission is to promote and support a workforce system that creates value and offers employers, individuals, and communities the opportunity to achieve and sustain economic prosperity. If your child is in special services, 504, or has a diagnosed disability, TWC can provide support for college and/or work preparation.

Workforce Solutions East Texas is a community partnership providing no-cost recruitment and employment services to businesses and job seekers in the East Texas area. This fourteen-county region includes Anderson, Camp, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Marion, Panola, Rains, Rusk, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood counties. It is their mission to improve the quality of life in East Texas through economic development by providing a first-class workforce for present and future businesses. Workforce Solutions can provide students access to job opportunities, training, and internships.

We are excited to host the FAFSA and Work Readiness Night and hope that you plan to attend.  Finally, please make sure your child has registered to take the TSI at the high school as it is offered monthly.  Most schools, including both trade schools and colleges, require the test results from a recent TSI.  Also, most colleges request a score from ACT or SAT.  Attached is a brochure for our WEEKDAY offering of the ACT ACT\Jefferson ISD  and ACT Student.pdf.  Registration opens November 7.  Please take advantage of this opportunity as we lost our February Saturday test date due to low attendance during our October testing.

Please watch our school website and my webpage for announcements.  I encourage you to meet with me to discuss plans for the future and ways that I can help you.  With scholarship season just around the corner, students should be completing their resumes and requesting letters of recommendation from neighbors, employers, teachers, clergy, and friends of the family.  Finally, Going Merry @ Going Merry is a wonderful one-stop shop to help you complete the FAFSA and look for scholarships.  I look forward to working with you during this exciting time.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns via email @ klburney@jeffersonisd.org or via telephone @ 903-665-2461, ext. 3041.

Sincerely,

Kathi Burney
